Inappropriate icons

I round the corner, roller bag in tow and see the doors of the elevator start to close.  I hurried to ask the occupant to hold the door, but opted for the daring move of sticking body parts into closing metal doors that could surely crush your skull.  The doors opened back up as I stepped into the elevator.  Carrie, as she later introduced herself, apologized for hitting the wrong button to keep the door open.  So for the next 8 floors, we discussed and laughed about why elevator buttons for opening and closing the door were inappropriate icons, which has me wondering, what else it just wrong in the way of user interface that we just accept, and sometimes struggle with.  Since I could not think of any that cause us to come close to the possibility of loosing an arm or a leg should the safety mechanisms fail, today's list is technology news.

Dodging firewalls and content filters

My current customer has a pretty tight grip on what can and cannot be accessed from their network.  I was searching on Google for an IBM website with steps to migrate content and unfortunately, the site was down.  Normally, in this situation, I hit Google's cached version, but apparently, the cached content was blocked on my customers network.  Here's my new firewall and content filter workaround in ten easy steps.
  1. Grab cell phone
  2. Search Android Market for Remote Desktop application (preferably free)
  3. Install Wyse Pocket Cloud
  4. Add connection to my Windows XP virtual machine @ home
  5. Connect to my virtual machine
  6. Open browser and go to Google and search for the document I was looking for and click on cached
  7. Copy the entire page
  8. Open GMail
  9. Compose a new message to my work email and paste the text into the email and hit send
  10. Open work email web client on customers desktop, read document
What a lot of work, especially since this was all done on a Droid phone with a really small resolution.  I love technology! Todays tunage:
  1. I'm Amazed by My Morning Jacket
  2. Dancing Barefoot by U2
  3. Louder Than Ever by Cold War Kids
